Parliamentary Committee Commends NPA for Strengthening Ghana’s Downstream Petroleum Sector

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development has commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for its role in regulating Ghana's downstream petroleum industry and supporting the country's economic growth.

The commendation was delivered during a working visit by members of the Committee to the NPA, where they engaged with the Authority's leadership to gain first-hand insight into its operations, regulatory responsibilities and ongoing reforms aimed at improving the petroleum sector.

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development, Hon. Eric Afful, praised the NPA for its contribution to the smooth functioning of Ghana's economy, describing the Authority as a key institution in the country's energy sector.

According to him, the NPA's regulatory oversight helps ensure the efficient distribution of petroleum products while making a significant contribution to Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He explained that the Committee's visit was intended to deepen Parliament's understanding of the Authority's work and verify information received during previous engagements.

"Our purpose is to follow up on previous engagements and verify relevant information. We are not here as policemen but to collaborate with the Authority," Hon. Afful said.

He further commended the NPA for its dedication and the important role it continues to play in Ghana's national development.

Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority, Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, welcomed the Committee and expressed appreciation for Parliament's continued interest in strengthening Ghana's downstream petroleum industry.

He noted that the visit demonstrated the legislature's commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and effective regulation within the energy sector.

"Today the Authority is honoured to receive the members of this august Committee of Parliament. I have always maintained that the work of Members of Parliament is not a joke, and so today we open our doors for verification so it does not become the CEO's words only," Mr. Tameklo stated.

Mr. Tameklo reaffirmed the NPA's commitment to ensuring that Ghana's downstream petroleum sector remains safe, efficient and resilient.

He said the engagement provided an opportunity to highlight the Authority's achievements, ongoing reforms and the regulatory systems that continue to safeguard petroleum operations across the country.

According to him, the NPA remains focused on improving service delivery, ensuring compliance with industry standards and supporting the long-term growth of Ghana's petroleum sector.

As part of the working visit, members of the Parliamentary Committee toured key operational facilities within the National Petroleum Authority.

Officials from the Authority briefed the legislators on the functions of its various technical departments and demonstrated the systems and technologies used to monitor petroleum operations, enforce regulatory compliance and oversee activities within the downstream petroleum industry.

The visit offered Committee members a better understanding of the NPA's regulatory framework and the measures being implemented to ensure the safe storage, transportation and distribution of petroleum products nationwide.

The engagement underscores the importance of collaboration between Parliament and regulatory institutions in promoting transparency, strengthening oversight and improving governance within Ghana's strategic sectors.

The National Petroleum Authority continues to play a central role in regulating the downstream petroleum industry, ensuring product quality, consumer protection, market stability and compliance with national energy policies.
