7 dead, 21 injured in accident on Hwideim-Acherensua highway
Seven people have died and 21 others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash on the Hwideim-Acherensua Highway in the Ahafo Region.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and involved a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, registration number GT-9931-09, and a Kia Picanto, with registration number BA-731-20.
Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) indicate that the Sprinter bus suffered a tyre burst while travelling on the highway.
The tyre burst reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the bus somersaulting before crashing into the Kia Picanto.
The impact resulted in multiple casualties, with seven people confirmed dead and 21 others sustaining various injuries.
Firefighters from the Hwideim District Fire Station responded to the scene after receiving information about the crash.
The emergency responders rescued victims trapped in the vehicles and helped transport the injured for medical attention.
The injured were subsequently taken to St Elizabeth Hospital in Hwideim, where they received medical treatment.
Following the accident, the Ahafo Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFO II Samuel Ferdie Tetteh, visited the injured at the hospital.
He wished the victims a speedy recovery and expressed concern over the impact of the crash.
The GNFS has not yet released further details on the identities of those who died in the accident or provided an update on the current condition of the injured.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by motorists and passengers on major highways, particularly where vehicle-related mechanical failures can result in serious accidents.
