Two injured in gas tanker accident at Nkawkaw Apesika

Two people sustained injuries following a road traffic accident involving a gas tanker at Nkawkaw Apesika on Thursday morning, prompting a swift emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to fire officials, the incident occurred on June 11, 2026, and a distress call was received at approximately 9:08 a.m., triggering an immediate deployment of emergency personnel from the Mpraeso Fire Station.

A five-member firefighting team led by Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Effah was dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations and ensure public safety.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a gas tanker had been involved in an accident, creating a potentially dangerous situation due to the highly flammable nature of its cargo.

Recognising the risks associated with fuel and gas transportation accidents, the rescue team quickly secured the area and initiated emergency response measures to prevent further danger to motorists, pedestrians, and nearby residents.

The firefighters successfully rescued two male victims who were trapped or affected by the crash.

Following the rescue operation, both injured individuals were handed over to emergency medical personnel and transported by ambulance to the Nkawkaw Roman Hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims, and their current medical condition remains unknown.

The Ghana National Fire Service indicated that the operation was completed successfully, with firefighters effectively managing the situation and bringing the accident scene under control without any reported fire outbreak or explosion.

The incident temporarily raised safety concerns due to the involvement of a gas tanker, as such accidents can pose significant risks of fire, explosion, and environmental hazards if not handled promptly.

Officials have not yet revealed the cause of the accident, and investigations are expected to be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

No fatalities were reported in the incident.

Road safety experts continue to urge motorists transporting hazardous materials to observe strict safety protocols and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to minimise the risk of accidents on Ghana’s roads.

The latest accident also highlights the critical role played by emergency services in responding to road crashes involving dangerous goods and protecting lives and property during emergencies.
