Gov’t to cover medical bills of children injured in Dzorwulu crash

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured families of children injured in the tragic road accident on the Dzorwulu-Accra Mall stretch that the government will fully support their recovery, including paying for all medical expenses.

The assurance was given during the Minister's visit on Friday, July 31, 2026, to some of the injured children receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital following Thursday's collision involving a school bus and a tipper truck.

Describing the accident as heartbreaking, Dr. Lartey conveyed the government's sympathy to the injured children and their families, stressing that the welfare of the victims remains a top priority.

She said President John Dramani Mahama's administration is committed to ensuring that every affected child receives the necessary medical care and support to make a full recovery.

"As the Minister responsible for children's welfare, I want to assure the families of government's commitment and support, especially that of President John Dramani Mahama, in ensuring the full recovery of the children," she stated.

The Gender Minister further announced that the government would absorb the full cost of treating the injured children, allowing families to focus entirely on supporting their loved ones through the recovery process.

According to her, removing the financial burden from parents is part of government's commitment to protecting children and providing immediate assistance during emergencies.

"The families will not be burdened with the cost of the children's medical treatment, allowing them to concentrate on providing the emotional care and support their children need," Dr. Lartey added

Dr. Lartey disclosed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are currently underway.

She expressed confidence that the appropriate investigative authorities would determine the cause of the crash and ensure that any individuals found responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.

The Minister noted that government would continue monitoring developments while providing the necessary assistance to affected families.

As part of the government's response, Dr. Lartey is expected to visit other health facilities where additional victims of the accident are receiving treatment.

The visits are intended to assess the condition of the injured children, provide reassurance to their families and ensure they receive the required support throughout their recovery

The tragic accident has also claimed the life of one child, who reportedly died in the early hours of Friday after sustaining critical injuries in the crash.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over road safety, particularly regarding the transportation of schoolchildren, with many expecting the findings of the ongoing investigations to inform measures aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected families while ensuring the injured children receive comprehensive medical care.
