Greater Accra Minister apologises over Northern posting remarks

The Linda Ocloo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, has issued a public apology following backlash over comments in a viral video where she appeared to suggest that postings to northern Ghana could be interpreted as a form of punishment.

In a formal statement, she clarified that her remarks were a genuine slip of the tongue and did not reflect her actual views or the official policies guiding staff postings within Ghana’s Public Service.

According to her, the comment arose during a media interaction in which she was addressing concerns about alleged irregularities in the issuance of development permits. Specifically, she referenced claims that some technocrats who bypass proper procedures are often reassigned to nearby districts, allowing questionable practices to persist.

She explained that, in trying to illustrate how some individuals are sometimes transferred far from their usual places of residence, her wording unintentionally conveyed a different meaning—one that suggested such postings were punitive in nature.

Her remarks quickly sparked criticism, particularly from individuals and groups in the northern regions of Ghana, who viewed the statement as dismissive and insensitive.

“I sincerely acknowledge the concerns that this has generated and offer my unreserved apology to all Ghanaians, especially my brothers and sisters in the Northern Regions, for any misunderstanding, offence, or discomfort caused,” she stated.

The Minister emphasised that she holds strong respect for due process, fairness, and professionalism in public administration. She reiterated that all staff postings and transfers within the public sector are governed by established rules and are not intended to serve as punitive measures.

She further assured the public of her commitment to transparency and accountability in her role, stressing that administrative decisions under her leadership would continue to adhere strictly to laid-down procedures without bias.

“I deeply value the trust reposed in me and remain dedicated to serving the people of the Greater Accra Region with integrity, fairness, and accountability,” she added.

The incident has sparked broader conversations about perceptions surrounding regional postings in Ghana’s public sector, as well as the need for sensitivity in public communication by government officials.

Linda Ocloo concluded her statement by urging the public to consider the matter clarified, while reaffirming her dedication to inclusive governance and respectful engagement with all regions of the country.
