Parliament has officially launched the “Parliament and You” educational series, a new initiative designed to deepen young people's understanding of parliamentary democracy, governance, leadership, and civic responsibility.
The programme is being implemented through a partnership between the Parliament of Ghana and Graphic Communications Group Limited under the theme, “Promoting Parliamentary Education Among the Young.”
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between children and Parliament by providing accessible, engaging, and educational content on how Ghana's legislative system functions and the role citizens play in strengthening democracy.
Launching the programme on behalf of Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor emphasized the importance of investing in the education and empowerment of young people.
According to him, involving children in discussions about governance and civic participation is essential for nurturing the next generation of leaders and responsible citizens.
He noted that an inclusive and far-reaching civic education strategy would equip young people with the knowledge and confidence needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
“Empowering the youth today will enable them to take centre stage in shaping the future of the country,” he stated.
Both the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would help children better understand parliamentary processes and democratic governance.
They encouraged Graphic Communications Group Limited to ensure that information shared through the programme remains accurate, engaging, age-appropriate, and relevant to young audiences.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, and the Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ato Afful, also highlighted the significance of the programme.
They stressed that children should not only be viewed as future leaders but also as active stakeholders whose opinions, ideas, and perspectives deserve recognition and engagement today.
Both officials encouraged participants to remain curious, ask questions, and take advantage of opportunities to learn more about governance, citizenship, and public service.
Supporting the initiative, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, urged children to embrace the programme as a valuable learning platform.
As part of his contribution, he donated 25 laptops to support educational activities and improve access to digital learning resources for participants.
The “Parliament and You” series is expected to play a significant role in promoting civic education, strengthening democratic participation, and inspiring greater interest in governance and leadership among children and young people across Ghana.
