Sam George calls for Black Stars disbandment, GFA dissolution after Gambia defeat
Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has called for the disbandment of the Black Stars and the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, with Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan putting the Black Stars 2-0 ahead before The Gambia staged a comeback to win 4-2.
The defeat followed Ghana’s 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening Group C fixture, leaving the Black Stars without a point from their first two qualifying matches.
Reacting to questions on X after the latest defeat, George, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, called for sweeping changes to Ghana’s football administration.
“As for the Black Stars, my position before is my position today. Disband the team. Sack the FA. Let FIFA ban us for two years. Take the time to properly rebuild the team. Truth hurts, but the patchwork is worse. Cheers,” he wrote.
His comments came after Ghana threw away a 2-0 advantage against The Gambia, who scored four times to complete the comeback. The GFA’s match report confirmed that Mohammed Badamosi and Ebrima Colley were among the Gambian scorers, with Colley scoring twice.
The back-to-back defeats have left Ghana at the bottom of Group C with no points after two matches, while The Gambia moved to six points from their opening two games.
The Black Stars are seeking a return to the continental tournament after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Ghana’s next qualifying assignments will come in October, when the Black Stars face Somalia in a double-header as they continue their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON finals.
The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
