Etihad, Africa World Airlines sign deal to expand passenger and cargo links

Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ghana-based Africa World Airlines (AWA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing passenger travel, cargo services, and customer loyalty programmes between Ghana, Abu Dhabi, and the wider global aviation network.

The agreement, signed in Accra, marks a significant milestone in strengthening air connectivity between West Africa and the Middle East while supporting growing trade, tourism, and business relations between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.

Once fully implemented, the partnership will allow passengers travelling on either airline to enjoy more seamless connections, broader route options, and integrated travel services.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Etihad Airways and Africa World Airlines will collaborate through codeshare and interline agreements, enabling passengers to book connecting flights on a single ticket across both airlines' networks.

The arrangement will allow Etihad passengers arriving in Accra to continue their journeys to several domestic and regional destinations served by Africa World Airlines without the need for separate bookings.

Similarly, customers flying with Africa World Airlines will gain easier access to Abu Dhabi and Etihad Airways' extensive international network of 118 destinations spanning the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America.

The airlines say the collaboration is designed to improve travel convenience while expanding route choices for business and leisure travelers.

Beyond passenger services, the partnership will also strengthen cargo operations by connecting Ghanaian exporters and businesses across West Africa to Etihad Cargo's global logistics network.

The collaboration is expected to improve access to international markets for exporters transporting agricultural products, manufactured goods, and other commercial cargo through Abu Dhabi to destinations worldwide.

Officials believe the enhanced cargo connectivity will support regional trade and create new opportunities for businesses seeking faster and more efficient international freight solutions.

The two airlines also plan to integrate aspects of their loyalty programmes, allowing frequent flyers to earn and redeem travel rewards across both carriers.

According to the airlines, the cooperation will provide additional value for regular travelers by expanding redemption opportunities and offering greater flexibility when flying within West Africa and across Etihad's international network.

Further details of the loyalty programme integration will be announced as implementation progresses.

The agreement comes at a time of expanding economic, diplomatic, and commercial ties between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.

Growing business activity, investment flows, and increasing passenger demand between Accra and Abu Dhabi have created opportunities for closer cooperation in the aviation sector.

The airlines said the partnership is expected to strengthen commercial links between the two countries while supporting tourism, investment, and cross-border business travel.

The Memorandum of Understanding officially took effect on July 24, 2026, with implementation of the partnership to be rolled out in phases.

One of the key milestones will be the launch of Etihad Airways' direct Abu Dhabi–Accra service, scheduled to commence on March 24, 2027.

Combined itineraries allowing passengers to book seamless journeys across both airlines will become available once the interline agreement is operational.

Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, Arik De, described Ghana as one of West Africa's fastest-growing aviation markets and said Africa World Airlines was the ideal partner for the airline's expansion plans in the region.

He noted that the partnership extends beyond passenger travel to include cargo operations and customer loyalty programmes, creating new opportunities for travelers and businesses alike.

"Ghana is one of West Africa's most dynamic aviation markets, and Africa World Airlines is the natural partner there. This framework spans passenger services, cargo and loyalty, and it will connect Ghanaian travellers and businesses to Abu Dhabi and to our network across the world's fastest-growing markets. We are here to grow with Ghana," he said.

Africa World Airlines Chief Operating Officer, Sohail Mahmood, said the partnership represents an important step in expanding travel options for customers while strengthening Ghana's position as a regional aviation hub.

He noted that AWA has spent more than a decade connecting major cities across Ghana and West Africa, including Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Lagos, Abuja, and Ouagadougou.

"This partnership with Etihad Airways across passenger, cargo and loyalty will give our customers direct access to Abu Dhabi and Etihad's expansive global network, while creating greater opportunities for Ghanaian travellers and international businesses," Mahmood stated.

Officials from both airlines said additional information regarding the rollout of the codeshare, interline, cargo, and loyalty programmes will be announced as each phase of the agreement is implemented.

The strategic alliance is expected to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate international trade, and provide travelers with greater flexibility while reinforcing Ghana's role as an important gateway to West Africa.
