GRIDCo, ECG announce maintenance across 4 regions on Wednesday, May 20

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a series of planned and emergency maintenance works across parts of the Greater Accra, Central, Tema, and Volta Regions on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, resulting in temporary power outages in several communities.

The maintenance exercises form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana’s electricity infrastructure, improve service reliability, and address recurring network challenges affecting customers in various parts of the country.

According to official notices issued by ECG, the power interruptions will occur at different times depending on the location and the nature of the maintenance activities. GRIDCo will also carry out emergency works at the Aflao Bulk Supply Point in the Volta Region to stabilise power supply in the enclave.

In the Accra East Region, power supply will be interrupted from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in areas including Dzen Ayor, Ability, Haatso Trotro Station, Agbogba Junction, 37, and nearby communities. The eight-hour outage is expected to affect businesses, commuters, and residents in some of the capital’s busiest commercial and transport zones.

Residents in the Accra West Region will also experience a scheduled outage during the same period, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Communities expected to be affected include Broadcasting, New Bortianor, Adanseman, Cassava Farms, Mr. Obeng, Oshieyie, and surrounding areas.

The exercise is expected to impact schools, markets, businesses, and households within the six-hour period.

In the Volta Region, GRIDCo’s emergency maintenance operation at the Aflao Bulk Supply Point will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The exercise is expected to affect electricity supply in Denu, Aflao, Ave Towns, Hedzranawo, Havedzi, Kedzi, Adina, Agavedzi, Keta, Afiadenyigba, Atiteti, Tsavanya, Anlo, Nakyikope, Abor, parts of Akatsi, Dzodze, and nearby communities.

The planned outages come just a day after multiple network faults disrupted electricity supply in parts of the Accra East and Tema Regions on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. In Accra East, a fault on the Taifa Burkina Feeder left communities such as Taifa Police Station, Taifa Mr. Agyei, Taifa Burkina, Taifa Oboohene, and adjoining areas without power.

Similarly, in the Tema Region, another network fault affected Doryumu, Wildlife Gate, Eastern Quarries, Twin Quarries, Recycling, Inzag, Shai Hills Military Training Camp, Bright Cement, Mawu be ji be, City Escape, Miotso, Potters City, Prampram Township, Abia, Kpoi Ete, and surrounding communities.

ECG and GRIDCo apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by both the planned maintenance works and the unexpected outages. The companies assured the public that engineers are working around the clock to restore stable electricity supply and complete all maintenance activities on schedule.

The power distributors further emphasised that the interventions are critical to enhancing the long-term reliability, efficiency, and resilience of Ghana’s national power distribution network.
