Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has stated that his pursuit of action over an alleged assault by police officers is motivated by the need for justice rather than financial compensation.
Mahama made the remarks after a meeting with the Police Management Board (POMAB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to investigate claims of assault involving members of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Task Force, known for operating the “Black Maria” unit.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mahama emphasised that the purpose of his engagement with POMAB is to ensure accountability and transparency in addressing the incident.
“No, we are not looking for compensation. There is no way we are looking for money. Obviously, I don’t need that. It’s not about that. It’s more just about justice,” he said.
The artist explained that his primary concern is to ensure that the circumstances of the incident are fully understood and that those responsible are held accountable.
“We just want to make sure people understand what transpired that day. Because we are all in the country, we are in a democracy. We want to understand what is happening and see how we can solve it,” Mahama added.
He further highlighted the broader importance of pursuing justice in such cases, noting that it is essential for strengthening public confidence in the nation’s institutions and ensuring that citizens feel protected and heard.
“So that when other people are elsewhere, and things like this happen, at least they are assured that in the country they live in, their matter will be taken seriously and there will be some kind of justice,” he said.
Mahama’s stance underscores the principle that accountability and transparency within law enforcement are critical for maintaining trust in democratic governance and protecting citizens’ rights.
