Immigration officer killed, another critically injured in dynamite explosion at Hamile

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another left in critical condition following an explosion involving a motor tricycle transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along an unapproved route in the border community, raising concerns over the movement of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes.

Information gathered from security sources in Hamile indicates that the explosion also killed the civilians who were transporting the suspected explosives on the motor tricycle.

According to preliminary accounts, the civilians were travelling along an unauthorised route when they allegedly failed to stop at a security checkpoint.

Security personnel reportedly attempted to intercept the motor tricycle, but its occupants failed to comply with instructions to stop, triggering a pursuit that ended in the explosion.

The blast caught up with the pursuing security personnel, killing one Immigration officer and leaving another with critical injuries.

The injured officer is said to be in a serious condition. However, further details about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where the officer is receiving treatment were not immediately available.

Hamile, located in the Upper West Region near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso, is an important border community where security agencies conduct surveillance and operations to prevent unauthorised movements and other cross-border security threats.

The incident has renewed attention on the security challenges associated with the use of unapproved routes, particularly the transportation of potentially hazardous materials outside authorised checkpoints.

Such routes can make it difficult for security agencies to monitor the movement of people and goods and to identify materials that may pose risks to public safety.

Further details about the circumstances of the explosion, the identities of those killed and the nature of the suspected explosive materials are yet to be officially established.
