STC to receive 140 new buses in two months – Transport Minister

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the State Transport Corporation (STC) will receive 140 new buses within the next two months as part of the government’s efforts to improve public transportation services across the country.

The planned fleet expansion is expected to enhance intercity travel, increase passenger capacity, and address longstanding transportation challenges affecting commuters and long-distance travelers.

The announcement comes at a time when many Ghanaians continue to express concerns over inadequate transport services, overcrowding, unreliable schedules, and limited access to quality public transportation, particularly on major intercity routes.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 8, the Transport Minister outlined measures being implemented to strengthen the country's public transport network and improve mobility nationwide.

Mr. Nikpe also addressed concerns regarding the deployment of the 100 buses recently commissioned for the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT), explaining that the government's transport modernization agenda extends beyond Metro Mass and includes substantial investment in STC.

According to the Minister, the addition of the new buses will significantly boost the availability of high-capacity vehicles and improve transportation services between major towns and cities.

“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation, but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months and STC will also have 140 buses and we will be able to have more high occupancy buses,” he stated.

The acquisition forms part of broader efforts to modernize Ghana's public transport sector, improve passenger comfort and safety, and provide more reliable travel options for the growing number of people who depend on public transportation.

Industry observers believe the expansion of both the Metro Mass Transit and STC fleets could help reduce travel delays, ease congestion at transport terminals, and improve connectivity across the country.

The introduction of the new buses is also expected to support economic activity by facilitating the efficient movement of people between commercial centers, regional capitals, and rural communities.
