Technical fault forces Brussels Airlines flight back to Accra shortly after take-off

A Brussels Airlines flight bound for Lomé, Togo, safely returned to Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra on Monday evening after experiencing a technical fault shortly after take-off, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has confirmed.

The incident involved Flight SN278, which departed Accra at 6:06 p.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, but was forced to turn back after the flight crew detected a technical issue while the aircraft was airborne.

According to the GCAA, the crew followed all established aviation safety procedures and elected to return to Accra as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

In a statement issued on July 20, 2026, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft landed safely in Accra without incident.

The Authority explained that the decision to return was made strictly in accordance with international aviation safety protocols after the crew identified a technical malfunction during the flight.

No injuries were reported, and all passengers and crew members safely disembarked after the aircraft landed.

The GCAA praised the professionalism of the pilots and cabin crew for responding promptly and appropriately to the situation.

"The flight crew acted in accordance with established safety procedures by returning to Accra as a precautionary measure," the Authority said.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that investigations into the technical problem have commenced.

According to the statement, Brussels Airlines will conduct the technical investigation in line with established international aviation safety procedures, under the regulatory oversight of the GCAA.

Engineers are expected to inspect the aircraft thoroughly before any decision is taken regarding its return to service.

The Authority did not disclose the exact nature of the technical fault, stating only that investigations are ongoing.

Following the incident, Brussels Airlines cancelled Flight SN278 and began providing assistance to affected passengers.

The airline is expected to arrange alternative travel options, accommodation where necessary, and other support in accordance with the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019, Part 2 – Consumer Protection, which outlines the rights of airline passengers in cases involving delays, cancellations, or service disruptions.

Passengers have been advised to remain in contact with Brussels Airlines for updates regarding rebooking and travel arrangements.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority used the opportunity to reassure passengers that Ghana's aviation safety oversight system remains effective and fully aligned with international aviation standards.

The Authority emphasised that the country's regulatory framework places passenger safety above operational convenience and that precautionary decisions such as returning an aircraft are standard procedures whenever potential technical issues arise.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest levels of aviation safety, security, and regulatory oversight across Ghana's air transport sector.
