Mayor of Accra supports flood victims in four communities with GH¢132,000

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has donated GH¢132,000, food supplies and sanitation equipment to residents affected by recent flooding in parts of the capital, providing immediate relief to communities hit by heavy rains.

The support, which forms part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's (AMA) emergency response efforts, was distributed to flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie and Bubuashie, where several homes, businesses and personal properties were damaged following the downpour.

The total assistance package comprised GH¢130,000 in direct cash support to the affected communities, an additional GH¢2,000 to help a shop owner relocate from a drainage channel, 120 bags of rice, 31 boxes of cooking oil, as well as eight wheelbarrows and eight shovels to facilitate clean-up exercises.

According to the Accra Mayor, the intervention is intended to help affected families meet their immediate needs while supporting sanitation activities aimed at restoring normalcy in the flood-hit communities.

During his visit to Avenor, Hon. Allotey presented GH¢50,000 in cash, 20 boxes of cooking oil, 300 bags of 25kg rice, five wheelbarrows and five shovels to support residents whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the floods.

Community members welcomed the donation, describing it as timely support as many families continue to recover from the destruction caused by the heavy rains.

At Circle Neoplan Station, the Mayor donated GH¢30,000, four boxes of cooking oil, 75 bags of 25kg rice, three wheelbarrows and three shovels.

The sanitation equipment is expected to assist residents in clearing debris, removing silt and restoring blocked drains that contributed to flooding in the area.

The Mayor also visited North Kaneshie, including the Swanlake Community and Ahonfe Close, where affected residents received GH¢20,000, four boxes of cooking oil containing 48 bottles and 100 bags of rice.

In Bubuashie Attico on Kanto Street in the Bubui Electoral Area, Hon. Allotey presented GH¢30,000, three boxes of cooking oil containing 36 bottles and 125 bags of rice.

The items were officially received by community leader Stella Yanky, who accepted the donations on behalf of residents affected by the flooding.

Speaking during his visits, Mayor Allotey said the relief items were donated on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the area's Member of Parliament, Ernest Adomako, as a gesture of solidarity with affected residents.

He acknowledged the significant losses suffered by many families, including damage to mattresses, household appliances, food supplies, cooking utensils and other valuable possessions.

The Mayor assured residents that the Assembly would undertake a comprehensive assessment of all affected households before providing additional support where necessary.

Beyond the relief donations, the Mayor disclosed that the AMA had deployed refuse compactors and sanitation personnel to the affected communities to remove waste and clear debris free of charge.

He appealed to residents to refrain from dumping refuse into gutters and storm drains, warning that indiscriminate waste disposal remains one of the leading causes of flooding in Accra.

According to him, blocked drainage channels continue to worsen flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, making community cooperation essential in preventing future disasters.

Hon. Allotey reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to working with community leaders and relevant government agencies to desilt drains, remove illegal structures obstructing waterways and implement sustainable flood mitigation measures across the metropolis.

He also encouraged residents to remain united and work closely with local leaders to ensure that relief items are distributed fairly to households most affected by the disaster.

Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, Alfred Asiedu Adjei, thanked the Mayor, President Mahama, Member of Parliament Ernest Adomako and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for responding promptly to the needs of flood victims.

He said the cash donations, food items and sanitation equipment would provide much-needed relief for affected families and support ongoing recovery efforts as residents rebuild their lives after the floods.
