Interior Ministry warns of possible flooding in Greater Accra ahead of Monday rains

The Ministry of the Interior has issued an emergency weather advisory, urging residents across the Greater Accra Region to remain alert and take precautionary measures as moderate rainfall is expected in the early hours of Monday, July 6, raising the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.

The alert follows recent heavy rains that caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra, resulting in damaged homes, destroyed property, disrupted businesses and the displacement of several residents.

In a text message sent to residents on Sunday evening, the Ministry said weather forecasts indicate a 40 percent probability of moderate rainfall occurring between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Although the forecast does not guarantee heavy downpours, authorities warned that even moderate rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas due to saturated drainage systems and recent weather conditions.

The Ministry advised residents living in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and take steps to safeguard their families, homes and personal belongings.

People were encouraged to monitor weather updates, move valuable items to safer locations where necessary and prepare for possible flooding should rainfall intensify.

Authorities stressed that early preparedness can help reduce the impact of flooding and improve public safety.

Public Warned Against Entering Floodwaters

As part of the advisory, the Ministry strongly cautioned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads.

Officials warned that floodwaters can conceal open drains, damaged roads and fast-moving currents that pose serious risks to human life.

The Ministry urged road users to exercise caution during periods of rainfall and to avoid unnecessary travel in areas experiencing flooding.

The latest warning comes at a time when flood concerns remain elevated across Greater Accra following recent torrential rains that inundated several communities, destroyed homes and businesses, and forced many families to seek temporary shelter.

The flooding also disrupted transportation, damaged infrastructure and renewed calls for improved drainage systems, stricter enforcement against building on waterways and enhanced disaster preparedness across the capital.

Emergency response agencies continue to monitor weather conditions closely and have urged the public to cooperate with safety directives to minimize the impact of any potential flooding.
