Nana Ama Bonsu outdoored as 15th Asantehemaa following passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III

A new chapter has begun in the history of the Asante Kingdom following the official outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu as the 15th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother of Asante).

The historic traditional ceremony took place on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, bringing to a close the period of transition that followed the passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the 14th Asantehemaa, who died in 2025.

The event attracted traditional leaders, royal family members and dignitaries, underscoring the importance of the Asantehemaa institution within the governance and cultural heritage of the Asante Kingdom.

Nana Ama Bonsu officially succeeds the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, whose death created a vacancy in one of the most revered and influential traditional offices in Asanteman.

The installation of a new Asantehemaa was considered a significant constitutional and customary step in preserving the continuity of the Asante Kingdom's traditional leadership structure.

The outdooring ceremony formally introduced Nana Ama Bonsu to the people of Asanteman as the new custodian of the revered office.

The office of the Asantehemaa occupies a unique and highly respected place within the traditional governance system of the Asante Kingdom.

Beyond serving as the Queen Mother, the Asantehemaa is regarded as the custodian of the royal matrilineal lineage and plays a pivotal role in preserving the customs, traditions and cultural identity of the Asante people.

One of the most important constitutional responsibilities of the Asantehemaa is the nomination of a candidate for the Golden Stool whenever the position of Asantehene becomes vacant.

The Queen Mother also serves as a principal adviser to the Asantehene on matters of governance, tradition and social welfare while championing the interests of women, children and vulnerable members of society.

The outdooring of Nana Ama Bonsu represents the continuation of a centuries-old institution that has played a central role in the stability and administration of the Asante Kingdom.

Her predecessor, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, was enstooled as the 14th Asantehemaa in 2017 by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II following the passing of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the revered mother of the Asantehene and one of the longest-serving Queen Mothers in the history of Asanteman.

Throughout her tenure, Nana Konadu Yiadom III contributed to the preservation of Asante customs and supported initiatives aimed at promoting culture, education and community development.

As the new Queen Mother, Nana Ama Bonsu is expected to continue strengthening the institution of the Asantehemaa while promoting unity, cultural preservation and social development within the Asante Kingdom.

She will also be expected to work closely with the Asantehene and traditional authorities in addressing issues affecting communities across Asanteman and preserving the rich customs that have defined the kingdom for generations.

The Manhyia Palace is expected to release further information regarding Nana Ama Bonsu's background, royal lineage and official profile in the coming days.

Her installation marks another important milestone in the enduring history of the Asante Kingdom and reaffirms the continued relevance of traditional leadership in Ghana's cultural and national development.
