President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government's commitment to improving the welfare of senior citizens through stronger healthcare, enhanced pension support and expanded social protection programmes, while highlighting ongoing efforts to grow Ghana's economy under the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme.
The President said sustained economic growth would create more opportunities to improve the quality of life for retirees and ensure that older citizens continue to live with dignity.
Speaking at the Republic Day Senior Citizens' Luncheon held at the Presidential Villa in Accra on Friday, President Mahama said his administration remains focused on implementing policies that will stimulate economic activity, create jobs and increase national productivity.
According to him, the government's flagship 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme is designed to boost industrial production, expand exports and strengthen the economy, ultimately generating the resources needed to improve public services and social welfare.
He noted that a stronger economy would enable government to provide greater support for pensioners and other vulnerable groups across the country.
President Mahama paid glowing tribute to Ghana's elderly population, describing senior citizens as the foundation upon which the country's development has been built.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by generations of Ghanaians who dedicated their lives to public service, education, healthcare, agriculture, security, business and other sectors that have contributed to national progress.
The President expressed gratitude for their decades of hard work and patriotism, saying their commitment continues to inspire younger generations.
President Mahama reiterated his administration's determination to strengthen Ghana's healthcare system while expanding social protection programmes for older persons.
He said government remains committed to improving access to quality healthcare services, strengthening pension systems and introducing policies that guarantee a dignified standard of living for senior citizens.
According to the President, caring for the elderly is a national responsibility that requires sustained investment and collective support from both government and society.
During his address, President Mahama encouraged senior citizens to enrol in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, to access financial support for the treatment of non-communicable diseases.
He explained that the initiative is intended to reduce the financial burden of managing chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and other long-term medical conditions that disproportionately affect older people.
The President urged eligible citizens to take advantage of the programme to improve their health and overall well-being.
President Mahama also appealed to families, communities and institutions across the country to continue showing respect, compassion and care for older persons.
He stressed that senior citizens deserve appreciation not only for their contributions to national development but also for the wisdom, experience and guidance they continue to offer society.
The Republic Day Senior Citizens' Luncheon brought together elderly citizens from across the country to celebrate their contributions and reaffirm government's commitment to ensuring they enjoy security, dignity and improved quality of life in retirement.
