Mahama to cut sod for 160-bed referral hospitals in Oti, Savannah and Western North

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut the sod in the coming weeks for the construction of three 160-bed Regional Referral Hospitals in the Oti, Savannah and Western North Regions.

Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the planned projects on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, describing them as part of the government’s broader efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services across the country.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu made the announcement in a Facebook post in which he shared the architectural design for the proposed Regional Referral Hospital in the Oti Region.

According to the Minister, the Oti facility will form part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region and improve access to referral and specialised medical services.

The three hospitals are expected to provide additional capacity for referral healthcare services in the Oti, Savannah and Western North Regions once completed.

The planned projects are part of the government’s stated strategy to improve the distribution of critical healthcare infrastructure beyond Ghana’s major urban centres.

The establishment of regional referral facilities is expected to strengthen the ability of health institutions in the beneficiary regions to manage cases requiring specialised and higher-level medical attention, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel to facilities outside their regions.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the planned construction reflects President Mahama’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure as part of the government’s broader development agenda.

The announcement comes as the government continues to highlight investments in major health infrastructure. On September 21, Mr Kwakye Ofosu also announced the commencement of land preparation for a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The three proposed regional referral hospitals are expected to add significant bed capacity to the health system in the Oti, Savannah and Western North Regions when construction is completed.
