NHIA disburses GH¢382m in claims to healthcare providers

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has paid GH¢382.85 million in claims to healthcare providers across Ghana for services provided to members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in September.

The latest disbursement brings the NHIA’s total claims payments for the year to GH¢2.115 billion.

Public healthcare facilities received the largest share of the September payment, amounting to GH¢197.32 million, representing 51.54 per cent of the total disbursement.

Private healthcare facilities received GH¢128.95 million, equivalent to 33.68 per cent, while mission health facilities received GH¢56.58 million, representing 14.78 per cent.

In a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Directorate on Tuesday, October 6, NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, said timely reimbursement was essential to maintaining healthcare providers’ confidence and ensuring uninterrupted services for NHIS members.

“Prompt claims payment remains central to the Authority’s operational reforms, and the objective is to prevent co-payment at the point of care,” Dr Bampoe said.

He said the timely settlement of claims should also discourage healthcare facilities from charging NHIS members for services already covered under the Scheme.

According to the NHIA CEO, the Authority’s priority is to ensure that NHIS members can access healthcare without facing financial barriers at the point of care.

As part of measures to support healthcare providers, the NHIA increased service tariffs by 50 per cent in August.

Dr Bampoe said the adjustment was intended to cushion healthcare providers while strengthening efforts to remove financial barriers to healthcare access.

The Authority said the prompt settlement of claims forms part of its broader operational reforms aimed at improving confidence among healthcare providers, strengthening service delivery and expanding access to essential healthcare services nationwide.

The NHIA reiterated its commitment to ensuring that providers are reimbursed in a timely manner so that NHIS members can continue to access covered healthcare services without unnecessary financial burdens.
