Appointment Committee to vet Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings today

The Appointments Committee of Parliament is expected to vet Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following her nomination by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

Her vetting forms part of Parliament's ongoing consideration of ministerial nominations submitted by the President.

Parliament was recalled from its recess for a five-day emergency sitting to consider a number of urgent government and parliamentary matters.

When the House reconvened on Monday, August 24, Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin referred the President's ministerial nominations to the Appointments Committee for consideration and approval.

The Speaker explained that the recall followed a letter from President Mahama dated August 11, 2026, requesting that Parliament return before its planned recall in October to deal with urgent matters.

The emergency sitting is scheduled to run until August 28, 2026.

Among the matters before Parliament is the consideration and passage of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The Appointments Committee is also expected to vet Mahama Ayariga, who has been nominated by President Mahama as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

In addition, the committee will consider the nominations of three individuals for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court.

The nominees are:

• Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko
• Justice Edward Amoako Asante
• Justice Anthony Forson Junior

Their vetting will form part of Parliament's broader constitutional responsibility to scrutinise presidential nominations before approval.

The Speaker also used the opening of the emergency sitting to clarify the status of Mahama Ayariga's position as Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament.

Although President Mahama has nominated Mr Ayariga to serve as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Speaker Bagbin said he remains the Majority Leader until the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) formally communicates any change to the House.

The clarification means that Ayariga's nomination does not automatically result in a change in parliamentary leadership.

The NDC would therefore have to officially notify Parliament should it decide to appoint a new Majority Leader.

Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings' nomination has attracted particular attention because of her political profile and her background as the daughter of Ghana's late former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

She is currently the Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and has served in Parliament since 2017.

If approved, her appointment would see her take responsibility for the ministry responsible for environmental protection, scientific research, technological development and related policy areas.

Her vetting is therefore expected to focus on her vision for the sector, environmental governance, climate change, scientific research, technological innovation and Ghana's efforts to promote sustainable development.

The Appointments Committee's consideration of the nominees is expected to be followed by parliamentary debate and decisions on their approval.
