Ato Forson overtakes Asiedu Nketia in flagbearer race

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has taken the lead in the race to become the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election, according to a new poll by Global InfoAnalytics.

The NDC Delegates Tracking Poll, released on September 14, 2026, puts Dr Forson at 32% support among delegates, up 10 percentage points from 22% in July.

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who previously led the poll, recorded 23%, down from 27% in July.

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu polled at 5%, while Julius Debrah and Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang were tied at 4%. Prof Joshua Alabi recorded 2%, and Eric Opoku remained at 1%.

The poll found that 28% of delegates were undecided.

In a head-to-head contest between the two leading contenders, Dr Forson received 41% support, compared with 30% for Mr Asiedu Nketia. The remaining 29% were undecided.

Global InfoAnalytics attributed Dr Forson’s increased support partly to gains in several demographic and regional groupings.

According to the poll, his support in Akan-dominated regions rose by 16 percentage points to 41%, while his backing in key swing regions increased by seven points to 36%.

The survey also found that 56% of respondents agreed that the NDC should choose an economist to contest the 2028 election against the ruling party’s nominee, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Among delegates who favoured an economist as the party’s candidate, 55% supported Dr Forson, the poll reported.

The nationwide survey was conducted from September 11 to 13, 2026, using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI).

Global InfoAnalytics said it sampled 3,611 NDC delegates across all 16 regions and reported a 99% confidence level with a margin of error of ±2.17%.

The findings reflect the views of delegates surveyed during the stated period. The poll does not determine the party’s eventual flagbearer, who will be chosen through the NDC’s internal selection process.
