Baffour Awuah ignored two invitations issued in February

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, failed to honour two invitations issued in February 2026 to assist with an ongoing investigation.

The disclosure follows an attempted arrest of the MP by EOCO officers at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

In a statement issued after the incident, EOCO said the attempted arrest was part of steps taken to secure Mr Baffour Awuah’s attendance after he allegedly failed to respond to the earlier invitations.

The Office had previously invited Hon. Baffour Awuah to assist with the investigation on two occasions in February 2026. The invitations were not honoured,” EOCO said.

The Office maintained that its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities when they attempted to arrest the MP.

According to EOCO, the attempted arrest represented one of the lawful measures available to the Office to secure his attendance in connection with the investigation.

EOCO said the attempted arrest was not completed after the situation escalated, with its officers assessing that taking further action at the scene could have endangered public safety.

The incident occurred shortly after Mr Baffour Awuah had appeared at the Accra High Court as a lawyer representing detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti. Videos circulating from the scene showed a confrontation involving the MP, members of his legal team and a woman identified as an EOCO officer.

The MP subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament.

EOCO said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities afforded Members of Parliament, but stressed that parliamentary membership does not automatically terminate an investigation or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.

The Office also said it would not take any action inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or other constitutional protections.

EOCO further disclosed that it had identified two individuals who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s departure from the scene during the attempted arrest.

The Office said the conduct of the two persons was being assessed to determine whether further lawful action would be necessary.

EOCO said the underlying investigation remains active and that it will review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video evidence, before deciding on its next steps.

Mr Baffour Awuah has disputed EOCO’s account that he ignored invitations to appear before the Office.

Speaking from Parliament after the incident, the MP said a woman claiming to be an EOCO officer approached him after the court proceedings and asked him to accompany her to the Office.

He said he questioned why he was being asked to go to EOCO without having received an invitation and denied the claim that he had previously failed to honour an invitation.

The competing accounts have heightened questions surrounding the circumstances of the attempted arrest, although EOCO has maintained that it acted within its statutory responsibilities.

The Office has indicated that its review of the available evidence will inform its next course of action.
