The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI) has directed the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to immediately withdraw a controversial circular suspending the employment contracts of all staff, describing the decision as unacceptable.
The Ministry's intervention comes just hours after GDCL management announced the temporary suspension of all employment contracts, citing the need to undertake a comprehensive assessment following the devastating floods that affected the facility on June 29.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 1, the Ministry said it had taken "a very strong view" of the directive issued by GDCL management and instructed that it be reversed without delay.
The Ministry stressed that all employees of Ghana Digital Centres Limited should disregard the circular, insisting that the suspension of staff contracts would not be allowed to stand.
"The Ministry takes a very strong view of the directive and IMMEDIATELY instructs Management to reverse that decision. All GDCL staff are to disregard the directive," the statement said.
The directive effectively nullifies the decision announced by GDCL, which had indicated that the suspension of employment contracts would take effect from July 1, 2026
The Ministry also acknowledged the difficult circumstances facing many employees following the severe flooding that struck parts of Accra on June 29.
It noted that several staff members had suffered personal losses as a result of the floods and assured them of the government's support during the recovery period.
"At a time when staff have been personally affected by the June 29th floods, the Ministry stands with its staff and the staff of all our Agencies," the statement added.
The floods caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure across the capital, disrupting operations at several institutions, including Ghana Digital Centres.
As part of efforts to resolve the matter, the Ministry disclosed that the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited has been invited to an emergency meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, 2026.
The meeting follows the Minister's visit to the Ghana Digital Centres on June 30, where he inspected the extent of flood damage to the facility and businesses operating within the technology hub.
According to the Ministry, discussions at the meeting are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the staff suspension directive and determine the appropriate course of action.
The Ministry's swift intervention underscores the government's commitment to protecting jobs while supporting institutions affected by the recent floods.
The outcome of the meeting with GDCL management is expected to provide clarity on the Centre's operational plans and measures to restore normal business activities following the flood-related disruptions.
The Ghana Digital Centres serves as one of the country's key innovation and technology hubs, providing office space and support services for technology startups, digital businesses and innovation-driven enterprises.
