Karaga MP builds 6,000-capacity mosque in Tamale

Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency and former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has commissioned a massive 6,000-capacity mosque in Tamale in the Northern Region, marking a significant addition to Islamic worship infrastructure in Ghana.

The newly built mosque, named Masjid Al-Noor—meaning “The Light” in Arabic—is designed not only as a place of worship but also as a centre for learning, community engagement and religious development.

The facility’s surrounding grounds can accommodate an additional 4,000 worshippers, bringing its total capacity to about 10,000 people, making it one of the largest Islamic prayer centres in the country.

At the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Amin Adam announced a personal donation of GH¢300,000 to support the initial operations and administration of the mosque.

“I have donated GH¢300,000 as seed money to the Masjid Al-Noor management to start the operation of the mosque,” he stated.

He expressed gratitude to the contractors, architects and workers who contributed to the successful completion of the project, praying for divine blessings for all who supported the initiative.

“May Allah bless this mission and all who contributed to it, and may He continue to reward us all,” he added.

Former Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, graced the commissioning ceremony and praised Dr. Amin Adam for what he described as a landmark contribution to religious and community development in the Northern Region.

He noted that the Masjid Al-Noor is more than a mosque, describing it as a multifunctional centre envisioned to support education, research, family guidance and community development.

Dr. Bawumia encouraged that the facility be used to nurture young people and strengthen moral and social values across communities.

He also donated GH¢200,000 in support of the mosque’s operations.

The Masjid Al-Noor complex includes prayer halls and dedicated spaces intended for religious instruction and community activities, with additional study rooms to support Islamic learning.

Religious leaders and community members present at the event welcomed the facility, describing it as a major boost to Islamic education and spiritual life in the Northern Region.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, who served as Special Guest of Honour.

His presence underscored the significance of the project within Ghana’s Islamic community and highlighted the importance of religious unity and development.

The construction of the Masjid Al-Noor is seen as part of broader efforts to improve religious infrastructure and provide spaces that support both worship and education.

Community leaders expressed optimism that the mosque will serve future generations by promoting religious learning, social cohesion and moral development in the region.
