Ken Ofori-Atta Will Return To Ghana At His Own Opportune Time – Frank Davies

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies, has said former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana “in his own good time.”

Mr Davies made the comments on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where the NPP held its National Delegates Congress and national officers’ elections.

He was responding to questions about Mr Ofori-Atta’s continued absence from Ghana amid ongoing criminal proceedings and efforts by Ghanaian authorities to secure his return to the country.

Mr Davies said he would not participate in what he described as the “court of public opinion”, stressing that accused persons and suspects are entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence.

“Our criminal jurisprudence says that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, so let those who want to wallow in the court of public opinion keep calling him names; do so, but I am not one of those people because I respect the rights of everyone: accused person, suspect and person of interest,” he said.

“For now, whatever the state had against Ofori-Atta has been settled in America, and so let us wait for what they have to settle in Ghana.”

The former Finance Minister is facing 28 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences before the High Court in Accra, according to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The charges stem from the OSP’s investigation into contracts and revenue assurance arrangements involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The case involves Mr Ofori-Atta and seven other accused persons. The OSP has alleged that the SML contracts resulted in significant financial loss to the state, allegations that remain before the court.

The High Court on September 29, 2026, adjourned the case to October 29 after the prosecution requested additional time to complete efforts to serve summonses on Mr Ofori-Atta and his former Chief of Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore, who are currently in the United States.

The OSP’s case tracker also indicates that an earlier arrest warrant issued in February 2025 was cancelled by the Circuit Court in September 2026, while a subsequent High Court warrant issued in December 2025 remains in force in connection with the extradition proceedings.

Mr Ofori-Atta also secured a legal development in the United States in June 2026 when an immigration court approved his application to adjust his immigration status.

The decision paved the way for him to pursue lawful permanent residency in the United States.

Mr Davies’ latest comments come amid continued efforts by Ghanaian authorities to advance the criminal proceedings in Ghana while Mr Ofori-Atta remains outside the country.

He maintained that the former Finance Minister would eventually return and urged the public to allow the legal processes in Ghana to take their course.
