MMDAs to broadcast assembly meetings live on local FM stations – Ayariga
The Minister of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to introduce regulations and directives requiring Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to broadcast their meetings live on local FM stations.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in local governance while giving residents greater access to proceedings and opportunities to participate in decisions taken by their assemblies.
Speaking at a breakfast meeting with development partners, heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry in Accra on Wednesday, September 30, Ayariga said the Ministry would collaborate with local broadcasting stations to make assembly proceedings accessible to the communities they serve.
He explained that MMDAs perform legislative functions at the local level and, therefore, their proceedings should be open and transparent to the public.
“Every assembly meeting, I’m coming out with regulations and directives that say that every assembly meeting must be aired live on the local FM stations because assemblies are local legislative bodies,” he said.
“Their proceedings must be as transparent and open to the localities the same way that the proceedings of the national assembly, which is a national parliament, is equally,” he added.
According to the Minister, the Ministry is already supporting regional broadcasting stations and intends to leverage their platforms to improve public access to local government proceedings.
The proposed directive forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public participation, transparency and accountability within Ghana’s local government system.
By making assembly meetings more accessible through local radio, the Ministry expects residents to have greater awareness of discussions and decisions affecting their communities.
