NAPO: Democracy must not be an excuse for insults, personal attacks

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has called on Ghanaians to promote civility and responsibility in political discourse, cautioning against the use of democratic freedoms as a justification for insults and personal attacks.

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, popularly known as NAPO, made the call in a Facebook post on Tuesday, August 11, as political debates and disagreements continue to dominate Ghana’s public discourse.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, democracy gives citizens the right to question leaders, political parties and policies, but that freedom should not be exercised at the expense of the dignity of individuals.

He noted that criticism is an inevitable part of public service and political life, but disagreements should focus on ideas and policies rather than become personal attacks against political opponents.

He urged political actors and citizens alike to learn to challenge opposing views without portraying those who hold different opinions as enemies.

NAPO said Ghana’s democratic culture would be strengthened when political disagreements are settled through robust debate, competing ideas and constructive criticism instead of insults and personal attacks.

The former Minister for Energy and Education stressed that freedom of expression must be accompanied by a sense of responsibility.

He encouraged Ghanaians to remain firm in defending their political positions while recognising and respecting the right of others to hold different views.

“Democracy requires freedom of expression, but it also requires responsibility of expression,” he stated.

His comments come amid renewed discussions about the tone of political communication in Ghana, particularly on social media, where political disagreements can quickly escalate into personal attacks and insults.

NAPO's appeal highlights the need for political actors, commentators and citizens to promote a culture in which robust criticism is encouraged while respect for individuals remains central to democratic engagement.
