Weija-Gbawe MP petitions Transport Minister for five buses to ease commuter woes

Weija-Gbawe MP petitions Transport Minister for five buses to ease commuter woes

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has petitioned the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to provide five dedicated Metro Mass Transit buses to ease persistent public transportation challenges in the constituency.

In a petition to the minister, the MP called for the deployment of three buses on the Weija-to-Accra route and two on the Gbawe-to-Accra route to improve access to reliable and affordable transport for residents.

Shaibu said rapid population growth in communities such as Weija, Gbawe, Tetegu and Oblogo, alongside increasing commuter traffic, had placed considerable pressure on existing public transport services.

According to the MP, residents regularly endure long waiting times and overcrowding at transport terminals, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.

He said the situation had made daily commuting increasingly difficult for workers, traders, students and elderly people who depend on public transportation to access their workplaces, schools and other essential services.

Shaibu identified the Weija-to-Accra and Gbawe-to-Accra corridors as particularly affected, noting that thousands of commuters struggle to secure transport to Accra and other economic centres.

He argued that the limited availability of reliable public transport was affecting residents’ productivity, safety and general well-being.

The Weija-Gbawe MP also warned that the shortage of dependable public transport had forced some commuters to rely on unlicensed commercial vehicles and overloaded tricycles.

He said such alternatives could expose passengers to road safety risks, strengthening the need for government intervention to improve transport services across the constituency.

Shaibu believes the provision of dedicated Metro Mass Transit buses would help reduce pressure on existing transport operators while giving residents more affordable and dependable commuting options.

The MP urged the Transport Minister to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station the five buses in the constituency as a matter of priority.

“It is in light of the foregoing that I respectfully appeal to your good office to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station five (5) dedicated buses within the Weija-Gbawe Constituency as a matter of priority,” he said.

The proposed deployment would allocate three buses to the Weija-to-Accra route and two to the Gbawe-to-Accra corridor.

The petition places the constituency’s transportation challenges before the Ministry of Transport, with the MP seeking targeted intervention to improve commuter access and address growing demand for public transport.

No response from the Transport Ministry or confirmation of a bus deployment was included in the information provided.
