“What have we done to you” – Naa Odoley confronts military over La Beach demolition

The Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, has confronted military personnel over the demolition of structures around the La Beach area, questioning why the community was being targeted despite assurances that the area would be spared.

Speaking to the media on Friday, October 2, 2026, the MP said she had engaged the relevant authorities ahead of the exercise and was assured that structures around Labadi Beach Hotel would not be demolished.

She said she was therefore surprised to find demolition work underway, adding that neither she nor her team had been adequately informed about the exercise.

“I went to where I had to go to, the authorities, and they assured me that Labadi Beach would not be demolished,” she said.

According to the MP, officials later told her that the structures were being demolished because the land belonged to Labadi Beach Hotel. She questioned the basis for the action amid concerns over ownership of the affected area.

“What has La done?” she asked.

Ms Sowah also raised concerns about the conduct of military personnel at the site, alleging that some personnel were firing shots and wielding guns while people were present in the area.

She stressed that, as the MP for La Dadekotopon, she had engaged the relevant authorities over developments in the community and had not remained indifferent to the demolition exercise.

The demolition comes amid continuing disputes and controversy over development and land ownership along parts of Accra's La beachfront. Recent reports have also documented a legal dispute involving beachfront property and Labadi Beach Hotel.

The circumstances surrounding the latest demolition, including the specific structures affected and the legal basis for the exercise, remain subject to further clarification from the relevant authorities.
