Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following reports that CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died after suffering a serious head injury in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a LaLiga 2 match.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon as Tenerife and Andorra approached the closing stages of their encounter, which ended with both teams level at 2-2.
With both sides having already had a player sent off, the match entered the seventh minute of stoppage time when a long ball sent De Miguel through on goal.
Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out to intercept the ball. Near the halfway line, where he was unable to use his hands, Owono attempted to clear it with his foot but struck De Miguel in the head.
Medical personnel immediately attended to the 30-year-old striker, treating him on the pitch for several minutes before carrying him away on a stretcher.
He was subsequently transported to hospital for emergency medical attention.
Spanish media reports indicated that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest following the collision but was resuscitated, with medical intervention reportedly restoring his heartbeat.
His condition appeared to have stabilised on Monday evening, raising hopes of his recovery.
However, those hopes were reportedly dashed on Tuesday morning when Tenerife announced that his condition had deteriorated.
The striker died shortly afterwards, according to the reports.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about player safety and the risks associated with serious on-field collisions.
De Miguel's reported death has also cast a shadow over the match, which had been finely balanced at 2-2 before the final moments of stoppage time.
The circumstances surrounding the collision and the subsequent medical emergency have drawn attention to the importance of rapid emergency response during professional football matches.
