Mnangagwa praises Ghana’s key role in Zimbabwe’s independence struggle

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to Ghana for its historic contribution to his country’s independence struggle, describing its support as crucial to the success of Zimbabwe’s liberation movement.

Speaking at a State Banquet hosted in his honour by John Dramani Mahama on April 1, President Mnangagwa highlighted Ghana’s role as a key training ground for Zimbabwean freedom fighters during the fight against colonial rule. He noted that many of his compatriots received military and ideological training in Ghana, which significantly strengthened the liberation effort.

“Most of my colleagues received training here in Ghana for the armed liberation of Zimbabwe. We are forever grateful to Ghana,” he stated, underscoring the lasting impact of Ghana’s solidarity.

The Zimbabwean leader is currently on a three-day state visit aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Ghana. The visit focuses on expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and economic development, as both countries seek to build stronger partnerships for mutual growth.

In his remarks, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening ties with Zimbabwe, emphasizing the long-standing friendship rooted in shared history, Pan-African ideals, and mutual respect.

The State Banquet also featured an exchange of symbolic gifts, reflecting the cultural connections between the two nations and their continued collaboration toward sustainable development and regional unity.
