Alleged COCOBOD BMW Removal Triggers Investigation

A fresh controversy has emerged over the alleged removal of an official luxury vehicle belonging to the Ghana Cocoa Board, with

former Chief Executive Joseph Boahen Aidoo reportedly moving to return the car following the emergence of an investigation.
Sources close to the matter indicate that the vehicle, a BMW 7 Series, was allegedly taken from COCOBOD after Mr. Boahen Aidoo left office without the formal administrative clearance normally required for the disposal or transfer of state assets.
The development is said to have attracted the attention of the Bureau of National Investigations, which reportedly began looking into the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s removal from the institution’s fleet.
Following reports of the investigation, the former COCOBOD boss is believed to have written to the appropriate authorities indicating his willingness to return the luxury vehicle to the state agency.
In the correspondence, Mr. Boahen Aidoo reportedly stated that he had earlier written to the Human Resource department of COCOBOD to express interest in acquiring the vehicle. However, internal checks within the organization are said to have revealed no official record of such a request being received or processed.
The situation has triggered concerns within governance and accountability circles about how state institutions manage official vehicles assigned to top officials, particularly after they leave office.
Public sector asset management rules generally require that government property—including official vehicles—remain under institutional control unless they are disposed of through clearly defined procedures and approvals.
Observers say the incident highlights the importance of strict adherence to public asset management regulations to prevent the unauthorized transfer or use of state property.
While the former CEO has indicated his intention to return the vehicle, authorities are expected to establish the full circumstances under which the car left COCOBOD’s custody.
The development is likely to add to ongoing public debate about accountability, transparency, and the safeguarding of public assets within Ghana’s state institutions.
