John Dramani Mahama Launches Ghana National Research Fund to Drive Innovation and Development

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and knowledge-driven development across the country.

The launch took place at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra and brought together government officials, academics, researchers, development partners, and stakeholders from Ghana’s education and innovation sectors.

The establishment of the Ghana National Research Fund is expected to provide sustainable financing for scientific research, technological innovation, and policy-oriented studies that can support national development and economic transformation.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the critical role of research and innovation in addressing Ghana’s developmental challenges, improving productivity, and driving industrial growth. He noted that countries that invest significantly in research and development are better positioned to compete globally, create jobs, and build resilient economies.

According to the President, the Fund will serve as a strategic platform for supporting groundbreaking research in key sectors including agriculture, health, education, science and technology, climate change, energy, and industrial development.

He stressed that the initiative forms part of the government's broader vision of transforming Ghana into a knowledge-based economy where evidence-driven policymaking and innovation play a central role in national progress.

The Ghana National Research Fund is expected to support researchers in universities, research institutions, and innovation hubs through grants, scholarships, collaborative projects, and capacity-building programmes. The Fund will also encourage partnerships between academia, industry, and government to ensure that research outcomes translate into practical solutions for national development.

Stakeholders at the event welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward addressing longstanding challenges related to inadequate funding for research and innovation in Ghana. Many researchers have previously highlighted the lack of sustainable funding as a major obstacle to scientific advancement and technological development.

The launch of the Fund is expected to strengthen Ghana's research ecosystem, promote innovation-led growth, and position the country as a competitive player in the global knowledge economy.
