Tema Police intercept sacks of suspected Indian hemp; one arrested

The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect, Bismark Kpormeno, for allegedly possessing a large quantity of compressed plant materials suspected to be narcotic drugs.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit, the arrest was carried out on Sunday, May 31, 2026, by officers from the Tema Highway Patrol Unit during a routine operation along the Tema–Ada road.

Police said the suspect was driving a Hyundai Mighty II container truck when officers signalled him to stop. However, he allegedly ignored the directive and attempted to flee the scene.

A pursuit was immediately launched, leading to his arrest at Bondase.

Following the arrest, officers conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered twelve sacks and eighty parcels of compressed plant materials concealed inside the container and wrapped in sellotape.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected narcotic substance was loaded at Kpeve in the Volta Region and was being transported to Ada.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries into the case.

Meanwhile, the vehicle used in the transportation of the suspected drugs, along with the seized exhibits, has been impounded as evidence.

The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities, while encouraging members of the public to provide timely and credible information that can assist law enforcement agencies in preventing crime.
