The Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Johannes Gleissner, has reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Ghana during a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in Accra.
The meeting focused on deepening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, with discussions covering trade, investment, technical cooperation, cultural exchanges and parliamentary collaboration.
Ambassador Gleissner commended Ghana for its stable democratic governance, strong parliamentary traditions and commitment to the rule of law, describing the country as a model of democracy and political stability in the West African sub-region.
He noted that Ghana’s democratic credentials and effective parliamentary oversight continue to make the country an attractive partner for international cooperation and investment.
The Ambassador expressed Austria’s desire to broaden engagement with Ghana across several sectors, including technology, education, trade and capacity development, while exploring new opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.
According to him, strengthening economic and cultural relations between Ghana and Austria remains a priority, particularly at a time when both countries are seeking to enhance international cooperation and sustainable development.
The courtesy call also provided an opportunity to discuss avenues for expanding technical cooperation and fostering stronger people-to-people connections between the citizens of both nations.
Responding to the Ambassador’s remarks, Speaker Bagbin welcomed Austria’s continued support for Ghana’s development efforts and praised the cordial relations that have existed between the two countries over the years.
He emphasized the critical role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting international understanding, strengthening bilateral ties and facilitating cooperation between nations.
The Speaker noted that legislative institutions have an important responsibility in supporting development partnerships and creating the legal and policy frameworks needed to attract investment and drive economic growth.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin also called for enhanced collaboration in parliamentary capacity building, stressing that knowledge sharing and institutional cooperation can help strengthen democratic governance and legislative effectiveness.
He further urged Austrian businesses and investors to explore opportunities within Ghana’s economy, particularly in agriculture and renewable energy, which remain key priorities under the country’s development agenda.
According to the Speaker, increased investment in agricultural value chains could contribute significantly to job creation, food security and value addition, while investments in renewable energy would support Ghana’s efforts to transition towards a more sustainable and resilient economy.
“Our Parliament stands ready to create the legislative environment that encourages such partnerships, ensuring they benefit the ordinary Ghanaian citizen,” Speaker Bagbin stated.
He added that Ghana and Austria share important values, including democracy, good governance, accountability and respect for human rights, which provide a strong foundation for deepening cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy in international relations and underscored the commitment of both Ghana and Austria to strengthening bilateral engagement for the benefit of their respective peoples.
Observers believe the discussions could pave the way for increased trade, investment and technical cooperation, while further consolidating the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries.
As Ghana continues to pursue economic transformation and sustainable development, partnerships with countries such as Austria are expected to play a vital role in supporting innovation, investment and institutional development across key sectors of the economy.
