‘I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago’ – BoG Governor Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Kwasi Asiama, has disclosed that he resigned from the Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago and no longer participates in its meetings.

Dr Asiama made the disclosure during the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in response to questions about his membership of the GoldBod Board.

His comments followed concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about whether his reported membership of the GoldBod Board, alongside his role as BoG Governor, could create a conflict of interest.

The concerns were raised by former Finance Minister and Karaga Member of Parliament, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, at an NPP press briefing on September 1.

Dr Amin Adam questioned the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, particularly the Bank of Ghana’s involvement in financing GoldBod’s gold-purchasing operations and reported financial losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Responding to the issue, Dr Asiama said he had already stepped down from the GoldBod Board.

I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” he said.

He explained that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) does not require the Bank of Ghana Governor personally to serve on the GoldBod Board.

According to Dr Asiama, the law allows the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the Board either by the Governor or another official of the central bank up to the rank of director.

The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.

“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” he added.

Dr Asiama’s disclosure means that, according to his account, he had left the GoldBod Board several months before Dr Amin Adam’s September 1 call for his removal.

The clarification comes amid broader scrutiny of the financial relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, including questions surrounding the financing and reported financial performance of the domestic gold purchase programme.
