Mahama shakes up National Security Secretariat, appoints Ayamdo Deputy Coordinator

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a major reorganisation of the National Security Council Secretariat, appointing former Chief of Army Staff, Major General (Rtd.) William Ayamdo, as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations.

The changes were announced by the Presidency in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as part of a broader restructuring of the Secretariat aimed at realigning key positions within Ghana’s national security architecture.

Major General (Rtd.) Ayamdo’s appointment places the former Chief of Army Staff in one of the Secretariat’s key operational positions.

As Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations, he is expected to oversee security operations and support the implementation of national security directives under the supervision of the National Security Coordinator.

His appointment brings extensive military experience to the operational wing of the National Security Council Secretariat.

The shake-up also affects former National Security Coordinator Yaw Donkor, who has been reassigned to the Office of the National Security Advisor.

Mr Donkor will serve as Director of Intelligence and Research under the new arrangement.

The reassignment forms part of the President’s broader effort to reposition personnel and responsibilities within Ghana’s national security framework.

Several other changes were also announced as part of the reorganisation.

Adam Saaka has been appointed Director of Logistics and Transport, taking responsibility for the Secretariat’s logistics and transportation functions.

Faustina Effah-Boadi has been appointed Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department, while retired DCOP Peter Ndekugri has been named Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit.

The changes also affect the Ghana Police Service.

ACP Alhassan Osman has been reassigned to the Ghana Police Service for further deployment, bringing his current assignment at the National Security Council Secretariat to an end.

The Presidency said all the appointments and reassignments take immediate effect.

The latest changes represent a significant adjustment to the structure of the National Security Council Secretariat and come as the Mahama administration continues efforts to strengthen coordination and operational effectiveness within Ghana’s security architecture.
