Aspiring National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has expressed strong confidence that the party has a realistic pathway to reclaim political power in the 2028 general elections, provided it remains united and focused on a common objective.
Speaking during a series of engagements with NPP Regional Executives, Patrons, Elders, and grassroots members in the Volta, Oti, and Eastern Regions, Afoko argued that the political landscape heading into the next election presents a unique opportunity for the party to return to government.
According to him, the absence of President John Dramani Mahama from the 2028 presidential ballot will significantly alter the electoral dynamics and create an opening for the NPP to effectively market its presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.
Afoko described Dr. Bawumia as a formidable and experienced political figure whose years of public service and multiple nationwide campaigns have made him well-known among Ghanaian voters.
He noted that the former Vice President has already established a strong national profile and possesses the credentials needed to lead the party into the next election cycle.
“Voters already know him. He is battle-tested and ready to win,” Afoko stated, expressing confidence that Bawumia can build on his existing popularity and emerge victorious if given the necessary support from within the party.
He further argued that the NPP successfully marketed its candidate ahead of the 2016 elections, ultimately defeating the incumbent government, and believes a similar strategy can be adopted in 2028.
Despite his optimism, Afoko stressed that electoral victory will depend heavily on the party's ability to overcome internal divisions and present a united front.
He warned that personal grievances, factionalism, and internal conflicts could undermine the NPP’s chances of returning to power if not addressed early.
According to him, unity should not be treated as an option but rather as a fundamental requirement for success.
“For the first time, we have a unique opportunity. When we developed the New Plan for Power years ago, we knew the sitting president could seek another term, and if he succeeded, we would remain in opposition for a prolonged period. We had to strategize effectively to return to government, and we succeeded. Today, the circumstances are different, and we must seize this opportunity,” he said.
Afoko emphasized that political disagreements should not prevent party members from working together toward a shared objective.
He urged members to put aside past disappointments and focus on the larger goal of securing victory in 2028.
Central to Afoko’s campaign for the National Chairmanship is his 3R Agenda—Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture Power.
He believes the NPP must reconnect its various factions, strengthen its organizational structures, and develop a compelling message that resonates with voters across the country.
According to him, rebuilding trust within the party and restoring confidence among the electorate are essential steps toward achieving electoral success.
The former National Chairman argued that the NPP has the experience, policies, and leadership needed to regain the support of Ghanaians but must first demonstrate unity and discipline.
Afoko also challenged party members to rise above blame games and personal rivalries, describing the period leading to 2028 as a crucial test of the NPP’s political maturity.
Drawing an analogy from boxing legend Muhammad Ali, he cautioned members against allowing emotions to cloud their judgment or distract them from the party’s broader objectives.
He explained that successful political organizations are built on collective responsibility, teamwork, and a willingness to move beyond past grievances.
“For years I chose to work quietly behind the scenes, supporting the NPP in private. However, recent developments have compelled me to step forward because our party must return to winning ways, and that begins with unity of purpose,” he said.
Looking ahead, Afoko expressed optimism that party members, supporters, and stakeholders would rally behind a common vision to position Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s candidate and ultimately the next President of Ghana.
He maintained that with a clear message, strong grassroots mobilization, and unwavering unity, the NPP can successfully challenge for power and secure victory in the 2028 general elections.
His remarks come as the party begins internal discussions about leadership, reorganization, and strategy following recent political developments, with many members already looking ahead to the next electoral contest.
