Mahama charges Black Stars to fly Ghana’s flag high in Panama encounter

President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a stirring message of encouragement to Ghana's national football team, the Black Stars, ahead of their opening World Cup fixture against Panama in Toronto, assuring the players of unwavering support from both government and citizens across the country.

In a statement issued on behalf of the President, the Government of Ghana and the Ghanaian people, Mr. Mahama described the nation's fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup as a significant achievement that reflects Ghana's resilience, determination, and enduring passion for football.

As the Black Stars prepare to begin their campaign on the global stage, the President urged the players to approach the tournament with confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of national pride.

"As you stand on the threshold of your first match against Panama in Toronto, the Government and the over thirty million people of Ghana stand firmly behind you," the statement said.

Mr. Mahama encouraged the players to remember the millions of young Ghanaians who see them as role models and sources of inspiration. He noted that their performances have the power to inspire the next generation of footballers and motivate young people to pursue excellence in their chosen fields.

"Play for the flag. Play for the children dreaming of greatness in your footsteps," the President urged.

According to him, representing Ghana at the World Cup comes with a responsibility that extends beyond the football pitch. He emphasized that the players are carrying the hopes, aspirations, and heritage of an entire nation as they compete against some of the world's best teams.

"This fifth World Cup appearance is a testament to the resilient spirit of our nation. You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams, and heritage of a people," he stated.

The President highlighted the deep emotional connection Ghanaians have with the national team, stressing that support for the Black Stars cuts across regions, cultures, and generations.

"From the streets of Chorkor to the plains of Bole, every Ghanaian heart beats in sync with yours," the statement noted.

Mr. Mahama also called on members of Ghana's diaspora community, particularly those residing in Canada and across North America, to turn out in large numbers to support the team throughout the tournament. He urged fans to create a vibrant atmosphere in the stadiums and serve as an additional source of motivation for the players.

"To our vibrant diaspora in Toronto and across North America, we charge you to be the '12th Man'. Let the red, gold and green illuminate the stands, and let our drums remind our boys that wherever a Ghanaian stands, home is never far away," he said.

In a move aimed at ensuring nationwide access to the tournament, the President announced that the government had secured official television broadcast rights for the competition. The arrangement, he explained, would enable football fans across the country to follow every moment of Ghana's World Cup journey regardless of their location.

"At home, the Government has ensured that no citizen is left behind. We have successfully secured official television broadcast rights, ensuring that every tackle and every goal is beamed into homes from Axim to Bawku, and from Ho to Hamile," he said.

The President described the initiative as a demonstration of the government's commitment to making the tournament accessible to all Ghanaians and strengthening the sense of national unity that football often inspires.

He expressed confidence in the quality, talent, and determination of the Black Stars squad, stating that the team possesses the ability to compete strongly and make a meaningful impact on football's biggest stage.

"The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Star will shine brighter than ever before on this global stage," he said.

As anticipation builds ahead of the opening encounter against Panama, Ghanaians at home and abroad will be hoping the Black Stars can begin their World Cup campaign with a strong performance and continue the nation's proud football tradition.

"Go Black Stars!" the President concluded.
