The Bank of Ghana has released its latest foreign exchange rates, showing slight movements in the performance of the Ghana cedi against major international currencies on Friday, May 8, 2026.

According to the central bank’s official rates, the Ghana cedi was buying at GH¢11.2692 to the US dollar and selling at GH¢11.2804.

The British pound was trading at a buying rate of GH¢15.3373 and a selling rate of GH¢15.3538, while the euro was buying at GH¢13.2596 and selling at GH¢13.2715.

The latest figures represent a marginal depreciation of the cedi compared to Thursday’s trading rates, when the local currency bought at GH¢11.2369 and sold at GH¢11.2481 against the US dollar.

Despite the recent fluctuations, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, has assured the public that minor movements in the cedi’s value are normal within the foreign exchange market.

Speaking during the 128th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, January 28, Dr. Asiama explained that short-term speculative activities can temporarily influence the performance of the currency.

“Don’t get worried if you see the cedi moving a little bit; it is normal. Speculative behaviour can move the cedi,” he stated.

He further noted that such fluctuations are usually temporary and expressed confidence that the cedi would stabilise over time as the Bank of Ghana continues implementing a number of economic and monetary reforms.

“It is more of a short-term kind of factor, but it will fall in line. We have announced a number of reforms,” he added.

The Bank of Ghana has recently intensified measures aimed at strengthening foreign reserves, improving monetary stability, and supporting the cedi amid ongoing economic recovery efforts.
