Business magnate and CEO of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, has unveiled an ambitious package of infrastructure projects for communities around the Damang Mine following his company’s official takeover of operations.
Speaking after the formal handover ceremony that marked a new phase in the mine’s management, Mr. Mahama indicated that Engineers and Planners has already begun reviewing proposals submitted by local communities. Among the top priorities under consideration are the development of sporting facilities, particularly astroturf pitches, aimed at promoting youth development and social engagement.
“I want to pledge this, and I want to say it for everybody to hear. I got a text from one of our young men in here. It says we should build astroturfs for all the communities, which we’re looking to do,” he stated, signaling responsiveness to grassroots needs.
Beyond sports infrastructure, Mr. Mahama outlined major transport and connectivity projects that could significantly transform the area’s economic landscape. He revealed that an application has been submitted for the construction of an airport in Damang, with plans to make it operational within six months. The proposed facility is expected to enhance accessibility by enabling direct flights between Damang and Accra, reducing travel time and boosting business activity.
“We’ve applied for Damang to have an airport, and within six months, Damang will have an airport, such that we can fly to Accra easily,” he announced.
In addition to the aviation project, he disclosed plans to develop a major road network linking Damang to Cape Coast within the next two years. The road, which could be constructed using concrete or natural surfacing, is expected to improve regional mobility, facilitate trade, and support the movement of goods and services.
“In the next two years, we’ll be able to drive from here to Cape Coast on a concrete road or a natural road,” he added.
Addressing any skepticism, Mr. Mahama dismissed suggestions that the announcements were politically motivated, emphasizing the seriousness of the commitments being made.
“I beg you, this is not political talk. This is real talk,” he stressed.
The planned interventions reflect a broader vision to link mining operations with tangible community development. By investing in infrastructure such as sports facilities, transportation, and aviation, Engineers and Planners aims to position Damang as an emerging hub for economic growth, improved connectivity, and enhanced quality of life for residents.
