African business magnate Aliko Dangote has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as a rapid turnaround of Ghana’s economy, attributing the improvement largely to renewed confidence in the country.
Dangote said Ghana’s recent economic developments demonstrate the strong relationship between trust and investment, arguing that investors are more willing to commit capital when confidence is restored in an economy.
“This has actually shown that money follows trust,” he said.
The Dangote Group President made the remarks during the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York on Monday, September 21, 2026, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The event brought together political leaders, development partners and business figures to discuss the future of global development and economic cooperation.
Dangote acknowledged that Ghana’s economic situation had previously been challenging but credited President Mahama with taking what he described as the right decisions to restore confidence rather than relying on extraordinary measures.
“President Mahama turned around the economy of Ghana in a very short time. It wasn’t a very good case, but when he came in, he didn’t do any magic, but he did the right things,” he said.
He further linked the restoration of investor confidence to the movement of capital, stressing that Ghana’s experience illustrates how trust can influence investment decisions.
Dangote’s comments come as the Mahama administration continues to highlight economic stabilisation, improved investor confidence and stronger macroeconomic indicators as key elements of its Resetting Ghana Agenda.
President Mahama has cited developments including lower inflation, currency appreciation, improved fiscal performance and stronger foreign-exchange reserves as signs of economic recovery. The President has also described the economy as more resilient to external shocks under his administration.
The Accra Reset event, held at the New York Marriott Marquis, marked one year since the initiative was launched in New York and focused on practical approaches to global development, including health governance, skills, fair deal-making and shared prosperity.
Dangote was among the international business and policy figures participating in the high-level gathering, alongside several African and global leaders.
The event forms part of President Mahama’s engagements at the 81st UN General Assembly, where he is also scheduled to participate in discussions on development, investment, international cooperation and Ghana’s economic transformation.
