Reduction in fuel export volumes not due to imminent shortage in Ghana - BOSTenergies

BOSTenergies Limited has clarified that the recent reduction in fuel export volumes to Burkina Faso and Mali is not due to an impending fuel shortage in Ghana.

The clarification follows a Reuters report based on comments by BOSTenergies Managing Director Afetsi Awono on the sidelines of an energy conference in Bangkok. Awono was quoted as saying the company was managing its export business to ensure sufficient fuel supply for Ghana.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 17, 2026, BOSTenergies said the report created an inaccurate impression that Ghana was facing an imminent fuel shortage and had consequently begun rationing fuel supplies to its regional partners.

“For the avoidance of doubt and in the interest of accuracy, BOSTenergies wishes to correct an inaccurate implication carried by the published report that the reduction in regional export volumes reflects an imminent fuel shortage in Ghana, warranting the rationing of available supply to Burkina Faso and Mali to safeguard local supply security,” the company said.

“There is no imminent fuel shortage in Ghana, and no cutting of supply has been implemented on this and any other basis,” it added.

According to BOSTenergies, the reduction in fuel exports to Burkina Faso and Mali amid fluctuations in the international market is largely linked to the ongoing rehabilitation of its northernmost depot in Bolgatanga.

The Bolgatanga depot serves as the company's designated gateway into the Sahelian market, making its operations important to BOSTenergies' regional supply network.

The company stressed that “no political, security, or diplomatic consideration played any role in this decision.”

Under normal operating conditions, BOSTenergies said it transports regional export volumes through an integrated network of pipelines and barges connecting its depots from southern Ghana to the northern parts of the country.

The company said this network enables it to supply the regional market at competitive prices while maintaining its required profit margins.

BOSTenergies said rehabilitation of the Bolgatanga depot is nearing completion and that it has continued to support fuel supply to regional markets despite the ongoing works.

The company explained that fuel products are currently being transported by Bulk Road Vehicles (BRVs) from its coastal depot in Tema to ensure continued supplies.

It added that these arrangements are being managed while maintaining equitable access to fuel across demand zones nationwide.

“Full regional supply capacity will be restored on completion of the Bolgatanga depot revamp,” BOSTenergies said.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regional fuel security through reliable and commercially sustainable supply arrangements.

BOSTenergies also said it was working closely with government and regulatory authorities to expedite the completion of the Bolgatanga depot rehabilitation.

It further pledged to continue engaging the media and the public transparently on developments affecting Ghana's downstream petroleum sector.
