Freight Forwarders announce 4-day strike at Tema Port over new AI system

A coalition of trade and freight forwarders’ associations has announced a coordinated four-day strike at the Tema Port, warning of major disruptions to cargo processing and port operations.

The group says the action is in protest against operational challenges linked to the introduction of a new public and AI-driven system, which they claim has resulted in increased duties, inefficiencies, and delays in clearing goods.

Speaking at a press briefing, Paul Kobina Mensah, General Secretary of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, confirmed that the strike will run from Tuesday, April 14 to Friday, April 17.

He indicated that members have resolved to suspend key port activities, including the payment of duties and processing of import documentation.

“We are taking a four-day coordinated strike… After that, the traders will be asked to continue the action if our concerns are not addressed,” he stated.

Mr. Mensah emphasized that participants have been directed not to make online payments or engage in cargo clearance processes during the strike period, arguing that the current system is unstable and impractical for efficient operations.

The coalition argues that the newly introduced system has disrupted established workflows, leading to higher costs for importers and operational inefficiencies across the port.

They are calling for the immediate suspension of the system pending a comprehensive review and stakeholder engagement to address the identified challenges.

Beyond the immediate concerns, the group is advocating for broader reforms in port governance. Mr. Mensah proposed the establishment of a high-level regulatory body to oversee and coordinate operations across key sectors, including finance, trade, transport, and safety.

According to him, such a body would ensure transparency, consistency, and accountability in port operations, supported by clearly documented procedures and defined administrative processes.

“We need a professionalised system with fully documented and published procedures so that everybody understands the process,” he stressed.

The planned strike is expected to significantly affect import and export activities at Tema Port, Ghana’s largest commercial seaport, potentially disrupting supply chains and impacting businesses reliant on timely cargo clearance.

Stakeholders are urging swift dialogue between the government and industry players to prevent prolonged disruptions and mitigate economic losses.
