Ghana signs Air Services Agreement with Trinidad and Tobago

Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago have signed an Air Services Agreement aimed at strengthening air connectivity between the two countries and creating new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

The agreement was signed during a bilateral meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C., on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The agreement establishes a framework for air services between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago and is expected to support stronger links in areas including tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges. Trinidad and Tobago authorities said the agreement forms part of efforts to expand the country’s international aviation network and strengthen its connections with Africa.

President Mahama, in a post on Facebook, said the agreement would contribute to efforts to deepen relations between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago through improved connectivity and expanded areas of cooperation.

“This agreement strengthens air connectivity and creates new opportunities for cooperation between our countries,” he said.

The two leaders also discussed trade and investment, air transportation and the reparations agenda, reflecting a broader effort to deepen diplomatic and economic relations between Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago.

The reparations discussions form part of wider engagement between African and Caribbean countries on historical injustices and cooperation on issues of shared interest.

The signing of the Air Services Agreement follows earlier efforts by the two countries to establish a framework for stronger air links. A Memorandum of Understanding on Air Transport was signed in 2020 and subsequently provided a basis for negotiations toward a formal Air Services Agreement.

While the agreement creates the framework for expanded air services, details on specific routes, airlines and the timing of any new services have not yet been announced.

President Mahama’s meeting with Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar formed part of his diplomatic engagements in New York during the UN General Assembly, where he has been holding bilateral discussions with international leaders on trade, investment, development and other areas of cooperation.
