Hyundai to establish West Africa Assembly Plant in Ghana

Hyundai to establish West Africa Assembly Plant in Ghana

Ghana is set to host a Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant as South Korea strengthens its economic engagement with Africa, a move expected to boost industrialisation, create jobs, and reinforce Ghana’s position as a regional manufacturing hub.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following the 2026 Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul, which he co-chaired alongside South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the Hyundai facility will serve the wider West African market and forms part of a broader package of economic cooperation initiatives agreed between Ghana and South Korea.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana; establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana, and launch new solar irrigation systems,” the minister disclosed in a statement after the meeting.

The planned automotive manufacturing facility is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s industrial capacity, support local vehicle assembly and production, generate employment opportunities, and attract additional foreign direct investment into the country’s growing manufacturing sector.

The development aligns with Ghana’s long-term industrialisation strategy, which seeks to reduce dependence on raw commodity exports by promoting value addition, manufacturing, and technology-driven industries.

Beyond the Hyundai project, Ghana and South Korea have agreed to deepen cooperation in several strategic sectors, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and critical minerals—industries that are increasingly important to the global digital and green-energy transition.

Mr. Ablakwa said discussions during the meeting focused on building a partnership centered on industrial growth, value addition, technology transfer, and sustainable job creation.

He stressed the importance of industrial development in addressing unemployment among Africa’s rapidly expanding youth population and creating long-term economic opportunities across the continent.

South Korea’s remarkable transformation from a developing nation into one of the world’s leading industrial and technology economies continues to make it an attractive development partner for African countries seeking expertise in manufacturing, innovation, and industrial expansion.

The two countries are also advancing discussions on a broader visa waiver agreement. While visa-free travel has already been approved for holders of diplomatic and service passports, negotiations are underway to extend the arrangement to all categories of passport holders.

The latest agreements come as Ghana and South Korea prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations next year, marking a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation.

Officials believe the establishment of the Hyundai manufacturing plant, alongside planned investments in education, technology, and agriculture, will further strengthen economic ties between the two countries and contribute to Ghana’s ambition of becoming a leading industrial and investment destination in West Africa.
