Parliament of Ghana has confirmed that it is working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands following reports of the detention of Independent Member of Parliament Kwame Ohene Frimpong at Schiphol Airport.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Parliament acknowledged that it had received information regarding the incident involving the legislator.
According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament together with the leadership of the House has initiated contact with Ghana Mission in The Hague to obtain detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the reported detention.
“The Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter,” the statement noted.
Parliament, however, did not provide additional details regarding the reasons for Mr. Frimpong’s detention or indicate whether any formal charges had been brought against him by Dutch authorities.
The incident has generated widespread public and political interest both in Ghana and abroad, particularly among residents and supporters within the Asante Akyem North constituency, as many await official clarification on the matter.
Kwame Ohene Frimpong became a member of Ghana’s Parliament on January 7, 2025, after securing victory as an Independent candidate during the 2024 parliamentary elections. His victory was considered one of the major surprises of the election cycle after he defeated former New Patriotic Party lawmaker Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.

Before entering politics, Mr. Frimpong built a reputation as an entrepreneur and philanthropist with several business interests across Ghana. Since joining Parliament, he has emerged as one of the few Independent voices in the current legislature.
Born on September 23, 1986, the lawmaker has gained attention for his independent political stance and grassroots engagement within his constituency.
As of now, no further official statement has been released by either Dutch authorities or Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry concerning his legal status or the exact nature of the incident in the Netherlands
