19-year-old student critically injured after being shot during Domeabra-Danchira demolition exercise

A 19-year-old Senior High School student is in critical condition after being shot during a demolition exercise at Domeabra-Danchira in the Ga South Municipality on Wednesday, May 6.

The incident occurred when officers from the Ghana Police Service were deployed to provide security for a large-scale demolition reportedly being carried out by a private developer. Eyewitnesses claim that gunfire broke out during the operation, resulting in the student being struck in the stomach.

The injured student was initially rushed to FK Effah Community Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the University of Ghana Medical Centre due to the severity of his injuries.

Medical personnel have confirmed that his condition remains critical, with reports indicating that the bullet caused significant internal damage.

Family members allege that the victim was stepping out of his home when police officers began firing.

According to their account, the shooting appeared indiscriminate, and the victim was not involved in any confrontation at the time. The bullet reportedly passed through his abdomen, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

The demolition exercise is said to be linked to a private developer, Frederick Kofi Asare, who reportedly undertook the operation with police support. Reports suggest that more than 1,000 structures in the Domeabra and Danchira areas were targeted.

The scale of the demolition and the circumstances surrounding it have raised serious concerns among residents and local leaders.

In a related development, the head of the Nii Djan Bi Amu family, Nii Gamu Osamanu Tackie Okai, has denied claims that the land was legally sold to the developer.

He has called on national authorities—including the President, the Chief Justice, and security agencies—to intervene and investigate the matter.

The shooting has heightened tensions in the Ga South Municipality, with residents demanding accountability over both the demolition exercise and the conduct of security personnel.

Community members are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident, particularly the use of live ammunition during what was expected to be a supervised civil operation.

As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not issued an official statement addressing the shooting.
