The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 60-year-old man for allegedly subjecting his 16-year-old son to a violent assault at North Legon, an incident that has triggered widespread public outrage.
According to Superintendent of Police and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Juliana Obeng, the suspect was arrested by the Madina Divisional Police Command following swift intervention after reports of the disturbing abuse surfaced.
She explained that preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred on May 3, 2026, when the teenager defied instructions from his father by going out to play football with friends.
Police say the father, identified as Eric Mante, confronted the boy upon his return home and allegedly acted in anger over his disobedience.
In a shocking escalation, the suspect is reported to have tied the victim to a quad motorbike and sped off, dragging him along a road near the Adonai Church area. The teenager reportedly fell during the incident and was dragged for several minutes, sustaining multiple injuries.
Ms. Obeng stated that the victim’s cries attracted the attention of nearby residents, who quickly intervened, stopped the act, and alerted the police.
The injured boy was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, while the suspect was arrested shortly after.
She further noted that during police interrogation, the suspect admitted to the act, explaining that he acted out of anger after repeatedly warning his son against going out to play.
The police have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a severe case of child abuse. Authorities are urging parents and guardians to adopt lawful and non-violent methods of discipline when correcting children.
Ms. Obeng also encouraged the public to promptly report all suspected cases of abuse to law enforcement agencies to ensure swift investigation and protection of vulnerable individuals.
