The Government of Ghana has announced that 104 flood-prone and flood-affected locations across seven regions will be targeted during the nationwide clean-up exercise scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding.
The two-day campaign, coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, will run daily from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will focus on clearing choked drains, removing refuse, desilting waterways and restoring public spaces damaged by the recent floods.
The initiative follows the devastating floods that affected several communities across the country, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, leaving lives lost, thousands displaced and widespread damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
According to a government statement, the exercise has been structured to ensure maximum participation by both institutions and residents.
On Friday, July 10, the clean-up will involve:
On Saturday, July 11, attention will shift to community-based activities, with residents expected to work alongside:
Government says the staggered approach is intended to maximise participation while ensuring that all flood-prone communities receive adequate attention.
To facilitate the exercise, government has directed that markets, shops, commercial establishments, corporate organisations and other non-essential businesses within the seven affected regions remain closed between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on both days.
The temporary closure is expected to allow residents and workers to fully participate in the exercise while giving sanitation teams unrestricted access to markets, drains and public spaces for cleaning and disinfection.
However, institutions providing essential and emergency services, including hospitals, emergency responders and critical public utilities, have been exempted from the directive to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
Government has appealed to businesses, transport operators, traditional leaders, religious bodies and the general public to cooperate fully with the exercise in the interest of public health and safety.
Authorities have identified 104 priority locations requiring immediate intervention following the recent floods.
The clean-up will cover several Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, including:
In Ga South Municipality, sanitation teams will focus on:
Within Ga Central Municipality, the exercise will cover:
In Ga North Municipality, key locations include:
Meanwhile, Ga East Municipality will focus on:
Within the Accra Metropolitan area, clean-up teams will undertake extensive desilting and waste removal at several major drainage systems, including:
Authorities say these locations have been prioritised because they frequently experience severe flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
The exercise will also extend to Tema West and surrounding coastal communities.
Areas scheduled for clean-up include:
Other communities expected to participate include:
The Ministry has urged all residents, businesses, transport operators, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations and community groups to support the exercise by participating fully and complying with all directives.
Government believes the nationwide clean-up campaign will significantly improve sanitation, reduce flood risks, prevent disease outbreaks and strengthen Ghana's resilience against future flooding while promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for all citizens.
